5 Things you could be doing instead of browsing internet at work

I read an interesting blog on the 10 different things you could do instead of watching TV. I really liked the simplicity of thought. Inspired by the blog, I have tried to compile a list of 5 things you could be doing instead of browsing the internet in office. Here we go:

  1. Talk to colleagues you do not know:
One of the biggest challenges in big organizations is the inability to work across different teams. Walking around your office and talking to different colleagues who work on different teams and topics, can provide the opportunity for cross-team collaboration. Worst case, you get more people on your professional network.
  1. Take a power nap:
It is a well known fact that a quick 20 min nap can re-energize you. So, go ahead and take a power nap.

  1. Exercise:
You can exercise sitting on your desk or go to the gym or take a brisk walk around your office. This gives you a break from routine and you will be surprised at how many new ideas you get while doing this.

  1. Re-visit your goals and re-plan:
It is always a good idea to re-read your goals and align your priorities with these goals. You will be surprised at how many times you just move away from your decided goals during the day doing all the urgent things and putting out the fire.

  1. Call your customers:
Whenever I have some extra time, I tend to call up my customers and chit-chat with them. Just calling your customers without any agenda can be beneficial a lot of times as you are not trying to sell them something and hence you are more prone to listen to them. You will be surprised at the repeat business opportunities this will bring forward.

Can you share any how spend those additional time we get in office?

  1. Thats a good exercise 🙂 Adding few more..

    1) Catchup with blog buddies on their blogs (sometimes customers also have blogs :))

    2) Play something but play! Be it TT or pool or for that matter foosball 🙂

    3) Share your work with others who r completely unrelated to your work, sometimes you get solutions from unexpected sources 🙂

    4) No harm in listening to documentaries when doing pure mechanical work 😀
