I am super impressed by the ability of Seth Godin to observe what is going on below the surface around him.
Earlier today, he shared another one of his brilliant insight about the nature of work and how it has changed in the recent past – from being clearly defined, measurable and manageable chunks; to ambiguous, requiring applied creativity, needs initiative on the part of the employee and being led than being managed.
You can read his post here.
So, as a leader or manager, what do we need to do differently? Here is a list to get started:
- Make visible, that, which is invisible or unsaid.
- Hire for initiative and creativity.
- Create a culture that supports initiative and creativity.
- Be there to serve the team in ways they want (remove obstacles) to be served.
- Give clear feedback consistently and continuously.
- Read the room and decide if your team needs you to be a facilitator, mentor, coach, teacher, friend, leader or manager. And go be that.
- Be deliberate to see, hear and value people on your team.
What else do you think you need to do as a manager/leader in this new kind of work environment?
