In my book Thrive, I wrote about one key meta skill that all of us need to master in order to succeed in a world surrounded by smart machines and intelligent algorithms (AKA, post ChatGPT world) was to get good at Learning or learning how we learn.
Learning How to Learn – A Meta Skill
I have been following Dr. Justin Sung, a learning coach for some time now and earlier today, he published a video on this topic based on a OECD report. You can watch the video here.
He reiterates my point about the meta skill that everyone of us will need to get better at – Learning how to Learn.
He also shares my point-of-view that the shelf life of any skill that we learn will only continue to reduce as the pace of change keeps increasing –> we will need to become professional learners in addition to whatever profession we belong to.
He also reiterates the point I make in my book that it gets more and more difficult to learn new skills that matter and we need to learn them at an ever faster rates in order to stay relevant.
So, the faster and better we get at learning new skills, the more ahead of curve we can be with respect to the changes that come at us.
If we want to become leaders worth following, we need to not only model this behaviour of learning all the time, but also invest in our teams so that they can continue to learn how they learn and get better at learning.
This requires investments in their actual learning, giving them time and opportunity so that they can practice what they learn.
It also means that we give them high quality feedback on the progress they are making, positive reinforcement when they are doing well, a nudge when they are not trying hard enough and some negative reinforcement when they are falling behind.
All said and done, in addition to being professionals, we need to also become professional learners. Find the time, energy and get intentional about how we learn.
In Conclusion
Lets remember that machines will never stop learning.. Neither should we.
And Dr. Sung’s YouTube channel is a great resource to get us started on this journey. I highly recommend that you subscribe and follow the channel.
