Rethinking Old Common Objects in New Ways

I came across interesting redesign of a few commonly used products and thought that the new designs were not only clever but were much better than the original designs.

Here we go:

The Time piece:

NU:RO Watch from Anton & Irene on Vimeo.

This redesign takes the hands out of the watch and inserts an hour glass instead.

Chalk:

One of the earliest memories that we have of our time in school is the touch, smell and taste of chalk. The good old chalk has remained unchanged for a long long time. Now, we have Nik Bentel reshape the chalk to do some interesting things.

With the re-shaping of the chalk, children can use it to fire up their imagination and curiosity and express it with the chalk. Simple, easy, cheap solution for an interesting problem.

Power Grids:

The electric power grids have been around since the time we learned how to generate, transmit and consume electric power. So, it comes as a fresh approach to power generation when we see entrepreneurs coming up with new ways to solve the energy crisis by creating mini electric power grids.

The only reason why there are still people living without electricity in the world is because the cost of bringing the power to the last mile when there are very few people living is just too high and unjustifiable from a commercial perspective. In such cases, building local small scale power grids for solar power seems to be the best alternative. They can be built locally with the help of the local people who will consume the electricity and can have a significant impact on the social and financial lives of the people in the village.

You can find more information about how a similar movement is happening in Nigeria here

In Conclusion:

With time and new developments, there is a big case for redesigning our regular day-to-day objects and rethink them and their use for us. If done well, this can be a huge value add to an entrepreneur who can do this consistently and to the society as a whole.
