PBTO S2E10: Things that Matter to being Successful with Anne Sugar

Who is on the show:

In this episode, we speak with Anne Sugar. She is an executive coach and speaker who has advised top leaders at companies like TripAdvisor, Sanofi Genzyme and Havas, She also serves as an executive coach for Harvard Business School Executive Education.

Why is she on the show:

Dorie Clark recommended that we should host Anne and that she will have a lot of insights that can help us. Anne proved to be all that Dorie said that she will be. She shares a lot of great insights that will help us find success in our endeavours.

What did I learn from the conversation:

  1. The ability to persist through and deal with failure.
    1. Failure is personal. Each one of us deals with it differently.
    2. We need to own it, accept it and move forward.
    3. The best way to move forward is by asking the question “What went wrong? What could I do differently next time around?”.
  2. Critical to get out of our routines, which means that we are opening ourselves to new experiences and new connections. That can lead to new connection and enhance our ability to formulate creative solutions for problems that we come across in our lives.
  3. It is critical to read and internalise new information. Develop a good reading habit. It doesnt matter what we read unless we regularly read.
  4. Identify and cultivate good relationships with mentors and coaches.
  5. Difference between mentors and coaches:
    1. We also need to understand that mentors are people who have been there and done that and can direct us or connect us with people who can help us solve our issues.
    2. Coaches help us reflect and find answers by ourselves with the help of questions and guidance.
  6. The Coaching process look like below
    1. Action: We do something to achieve a clearly defined goal.
    2. Reflection: Reflect on the action and if or not we achieve our goal.
    3. Discussion: Discuss on what went on in reality.
    4. Internalisation / Learning: Learn from what we did. Then decide the next action and take that action.
  7. We can be our own coach as well, if needed, as long as we have the discipline to go through the coaching process.
  8. We can all learn from journalists and how they approach any given problem. They think in what, who, when, why and how. They know the importance of never burying the lead.
