Five-P factors for Root Cause Analysis – Gartner

I read a post by Lydia Leong of Gartner on her blog about the 5P’s for root cause analysis for any given problem (the 6th P). You can read the entire post here. In the post the 5P’s that she talks about allow someone to go deep to find out what really happened and understand why it happened, so that whatever correction action needed to be taken can be done to avoid a similar problem arising again. She picks this framework from Macneil’s Five P factors model used in medicine/psychology and applies it under the IT management. The first ever […]

China’s ‘Negative List’ Adds Entry Limits to News Service Sector And Why I think This Could be a move in the Right Direction!

Last week saw Chinese government announce that they will no longer allow for private investments in the News industry. You can read more about this on the Bloomberg site here. In a strange way, I kind of think this is a good idea but not for the reasons that the Chinese government took this decision. Let me explain with respect to TV NEWS channels. My explanation below for the TV NEWS Channels holds true for newspapers to magazines to radio channels. It’s just easier to explain this from one perspective (I can see the irony here :-)). 6 Levels of Commitment to Change

Premise: Every change or a transformation effort needs the support and commitment of people who will either be affected by the change or who lead the change or who could influence the success of the change effort. Hence, it is important for those who want to drive or lead the change effort learn how committed they are to the change. Along the spectrum, there are 6 levels or stages of commitment that […]

Book Review – Humanocracy by Gary Hamel & Michele Zanini

Overview: Gary Hamel has been one of my favorite authors and management guru’s. In his most recent book Humanocracy, he lays out the case against bureaucracy and instead argues that we need to embrace what he calls “Humanocracy” as in build human centric organisations. He chronicles some interesting experiments being done worldwide with different management philosophies and based on them, posits some principles which when put in use can lead organisations to become a lot more human centric and can address the shackles that bureaucracy has on most organisations. What is the book about: The first third of the book […]

Thoughts about How to Define and Use Metrics Effectively

Premise:   We live in a world (now more than ever) filled with data. Collecting data, all kinds has become fashionable. What this has also led to is the proliferation of KPI’s.   We measure all kinds of things and it has slowly but steadily become common practice to move to pay-for-performance models in every sphere of life including businesses, policing, healthcare, education, non-profits, governments, etc.   The assumption is that if the KPI’s are being achieved and over a period of time are trending in the right direction (usually up and to the right corner), everything is good.   […]
